So you’re not on twitter…but you should be.

Twitter. Just 4 years ago the only meaning was the sound a bunch of birds make. Now, Twitter is a social media phenomenon. It’s being talked about in your kids’ schools, on the news and covered by all media. Oprah’s even on twitter.

But what is it? Why should you be on it? And most importantly, what do you do once you are on it?

Twitter has many uses, but most importantly it is a way to interact with the social sphere. Key word – interact. Twitter is not a one way promotional tool, in fact, using it in this manner will quickly get you booted from the site and tagged as a spammer. So, how do you use it correctly? Follow these 5 steps of getting started on twitter, and 5 tips of maintaining your twitter strategy.twitter

  1. Upload a photo of yourself, one that allows us to see who you are.
  2. Create a custom designed background that matches your website and tells us a bit about you.
  3. Write your biography, one that clues us in to what you do, a bit about who you are, and don’t forget the link to your website.
  4. Tweet. Interesting stories, things about what you are doing. Get at least 10-15 tweets.
  5. Start adding followers (find me @kirstenwright) by adding people you know in real life first. Then search for people who have similar interests using tools like twellow.com.

To maintain your strategy:

  1. Use a 40/30/30 strategy with your tweets. 40% conversation with others, 30% sharing links and information, 30% about what you’re doing.
  2. Connect your twitter stream with your blog (on the sidebar), use tools that make it easy to manage (tweetdeck or seesmic desktop).
  3. Run searches on twitter for terms that relate to you. Monitor who is talking about you and engage them in a conversation. For example, a great search term I use to follow what’s happening in Orange County is #tworco (twitter orange county).
  4. Remember, twitter is like a conference event. Things you would say to someone in front of everyone can be a tweet. If you would whisper it, use a dm. Tw-etiquette is important to maintain.
  5. Attend tweet-ups in your area to bring relationships to real life. They are easy to find by either sending out a tweet asking others in the area or checking on Facebook by searching your city name plus “tweetup”.
